Matrox Monarch EDGE Product of the Year

In its New York Fashion Week debut, the Matrox Monarch EDGE encoder enables B Live to offer an interactive, multi-camera viewing experience to Tommy Hilfiger’s global fan base…

B Live’s camera crew captured each angle separately. Four 1080p30 video streams, including three isolated views and one director’s cut that B Live produced on-site, were sent back to the B Live office via satellite. There, Monarch EDGE received the feeds and encoded them into a single 4K, 20-Mbps stream that was then sent to the B Live platform. On the B Live user interface embedded in the Tommy Hilfiger website, fans were able to easily decide which part of the show to follow from the three isolated feeds available in addition to the director’s cut – all from their mobile devices, laptops, or desktop computers. These viewers – numbering over 500,000 – were also able to watch the show live on Tommy Hilfiger’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube channels. [PRESS RELEASE]

Pristine Quality Delivered to Any Screen
Producing and delivering live events in 4K is becoming more widespread, and homes across the globe are adding increasingly fast network download capabilities, as well as 4K TVs to accommodate this content. OVPs are capable of down-scaling content optimised for large 4K TV screens to smaller screens when 4K streams are sent to them. When OVPs let TVs tackle the up-scaling of HD content to fill screens, the result is not optimal. Monarch EDGE eliminates any comprise by encoding 4K at high frame rates (50 or 60 fps), while the OVP handles any down-scaling. With Monarch EDGE, content providers can deliver a superlative 4K viewing experience.

Stream Every Angle
Monarch EDGE is a high-density encoding platform that can accept four independent HD inputs and deliver multiple streams per input, ideal for central equipment room installations. Also one of the latest innovations from YouTube is multi-camera event support, which allows users to view a main camera angle, or switch to a secondary angle if desired. With a single Monarch EDGE device, four different camera angles can be streamed simultaneously.

4K/Multi-HD Remote Production Encoder

Affordably produce live, multi-camera events, while minimising on-site expenses by keeping talent in-house with Monarch EDGE. A compact, robust, and low-power remote production encoder, Monarch EDGE synchronises and securely delivers remote camera feeds to your master control room or cloud for production with remarkably low latency. Programs destined for web or over-the-top (OTT) delivery can select the 4:2:0 8-bit encoder version, while the 4:2:2 10-bit capable Monarch EDGE encoder version is ideal for demanding, broadcast-quality productions.

Big Productions, Small Footprint
Easily produce multi-angle live events by extending the production studio to any remote location with a network connection. Monarch EDGE can encode up to four camera feeds from HD or 3G-SDI sources. When an in-studio 4K production requires a remote feed, Monarch EDGE can accept either 4K signals over 12G-SDI, or a quad 3G-SDI to deliver a full-4K stream. For events that require more cameras, its compact footprint ensures that two units will fit into a single 1RU space.

High-Density Contribution Encoder

The contribution or mezzanine-level encoding capabilities of Monarch EDGE provide broadcasters with a means to easily add additional or complimentary backhaul feeds, or redundant contribution channels of their primary feeds. This small-footprint low-power appliance delivers quad-channel broadcast quality with 4:2:2 10-bit streams. It has enough encoding horsepower to simultaneously generate low-bitrate 4:2:0 proxy streams for each input, which can be monitored by any device on the network.

Built for High Quality 10-bit H.264 Encoding
The optimised H.264 engine powering Monarch EDGE keeps data rates exceptionally low without sacrificing quality. I-frame-only streams reaching 150 Mbps can be delivered if quality is a high priority. Each input can be streamed at resolutions up to 1080p60 using the High 4:2:2 H.264 encoding profile. Powerful, real-time de-interlacing and scaling engines allow multi-resolution streams to be simultaneously created for each input.

Exceptionally Low Encode Latency
In live productions, long encode and transmission latency can have adverse effects on the production. With a 50ms latency between input of uncompressed video and output of compressed stream, Monarch EDGE achieves some of the lowest compression latency on the market.

Uncompromising H.264 Quality
The H.264 codec is universally accepted for web contribution and live streaming. Monarch EDGE’s unique implementation of the codec keeps data rates exceptionally low while minimising latency without sacrificing quality. Monarch EDGE’s independent encoding operations per input can be configured to stream to a single or multiple destinations. Each operation benefits from a powerful scaling and de-interlacing engine to ensure only pristine images and audio are encoded.

Flexible Streaming Formats
Monarch EDGE supports a variety of streaming protocols. Social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube use the ever-popular RTMP format. SRT is a new open-source format that provides the reliability of RTMP, while reducing latency, for use on open networks. Dozens of OVPs and the Wowza Streaming Engine media server support this format. On local networks, MPEG-2 TS or RTSP streams can be selected for delivery over in-house networks.

SDI and IP Connectivity
Monarch EDGE offers flexible, future-proof connectivity with 3G, 12G SDI, and ST 2110 over 25 GbE network connections. Inputs are auto-detectable and allow for a wide range of connectivity to devices such as cameras, switchers, vision mixers or routers. Additionally, audio can be selected from two channels of embedded audio per video input, or professional XLR connectors.

Convenient, Centralised Control
Monarch EDGE Control Hub is a powerful application that provides remote-control management and configuration of all network-connected encoders from a central location. This powerful software provides authorised users with high-level views of all devices, and enables full access and control from a single, easy-to-use interface.

Preview Inputs
Allowing up to four simultaneous input previews on a single desktop monitor, Monarch EDGE ensures that videos are ready to be webcasted. Monarch EDGE Control Hub allows users to effortlessly configure how they would like to preview sources of input. Users can choose to view one input, cycle through inputs, or view four inputs simultaneously.

Robust and Practical Design
Monarch EDGE was built with reliability in mind. An LCD screen on the front of the appliance allows users to quickly access its status and configuration settings. A locking power connector safeguards against connection loss during production. Redundant Ethernet (1 GbE) ports allow users to control the device from one port while sending video from a second port. Users can opt to send the same streams from each port while taking completely separate network paths. Finally, Monarch EDGE’s compact design ensures it can be installed in a fly-pack, OB van, or with a second Monarch EDGE unit in a 1RU-rack space.
